HAM Radio Licence Exam Tips: Pass Your Technician Test
Getting your HAM radio licence starts with the Technician class exam. It's 35 multiple-choice questions, and you need 26 correct (74%) to pass. Here's how to prepare efficiently.
What the Exam Covers
The Technician exam question pool is organized into topics:
FCC Rules and Regulations — Licence classes, call signs, operating privileges, station identification requirements, prohibited communications
Operating Procedures — Contact protocols, repeater operation, emergency communications, phonetic alphabet, Q signals
Radio Wave Propagation — How signals travel, line-of-sight, HF propagation, VHF/UHF characteristics
Electrical Principles — Ohm's law, power calculations, basic circuits, component identification
Station Equipment — Transceiver operation, antennas, feed lines, SWR, RF safety
Study Approach
1. Start with Regulations — FCC rules are straightforward memorization and make up a large portion of the test.
2. Don't Fear the Math — There are only a few calculation questions. Know Ohm's Law (V = IR) and the power formula (P = IV). That covers most math questions.
3. Learn Antenna Basics — Know the difference between dipoles, verticals, and Yagis. Understand why antenna height matters for VHF/UHF.
4. Practice with the Actual Question Pool — The FCC publishes the exact question pool that test questions come from. TRY2PASS includes all current pool questions.
Key Facts to Memorize
- Technician class gives access to all VHF/UHF bands and some HF privileges - Maximum power for Technician on HF: 200 watts PEP - Your call sign must be transmitted every 10 minutes and at the end of a transmission - No broadcasting (one-way transmissions to the public) is allowed - Emergency communications can use any frequency when life/property is at risk
Taking the Test
- Find a local Volunteer Examiner (VE) session at arrl.org - Bring a government-issued photo ID and the exam fee (typically $15) - Calculators are allowed but phones are not - Results are usually given immediately after the test
