SmartServe Ontario Test Questions 2026: Study Guide and Practice Tips
SmartServe is Ontario's mandatory responsible alcohol service training program. If you serve, sell, or handle alcohol in Ontario — at a bar, restaurant, event venue, or retail store — you need SmartServe certification.
The SmartServe Exam
The online exam has 40 questions. You need 80% (32 correct) to pass. The exam is open-book — the SmartServe training materials are available during the test, but the time pressure means you need to know the key concepts well.
Signs of Intoxication
The exam heavily tests your ability to recognize and respond to intoxication:
Physical signs: Red/flushed face, glassy or bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, unsteady movement, fumbling with money.
Behavioural signs: Loud or aggressive behaviour, overly friendly, poor judgment, repeating themselves, starting arguments.
Important: You must stop serving before someone becomes visibly intoxicated — not after. The Liquor Licence Act holds servers legally responsible for serving intoxicated people.
ID Checking
The legal drinking age in Ontario is 19. You must check ID if someone appears under 25. Acceptable forms of ID:
- Ontario driver's licence - Canadian passport - Canadian Citizenship Card - BYID card (government-issued)
Not acceptable: SIN cards, health cards, bank cards, student IDs.
When ID appears altered or you're unsure — refuse service. When in doubt, card them. When still in doubt, refuse.
Handling Refusals
Refusing service is a required skill. When refusing: - Be calm, polite, and firm - Do not argue or embarrass the person - Offer water and food - Offer to call a taxi or designated driver - Do not serve someone who was refused elsewhere in the venue that night
AGCO Regulations
Key Liquor Licence Act rules: - You can be personally fined up to $100,000 for serving a minor or intoxicated person - Happy hour is legal but 2-for-1 drinks are not (you can't sell drinks below cost) - Serving ends at 2 AM; bars must close by 3 AM - Open liquor cannot leave the licensed premises
